Professor Wendy Smooth Receives Lewellen Award for Distinguished Service!

Associate Professor of WGSS, Wendy Smooth

Dr. Wendy Smooth, associate professor in WGSS, has recently received the Larry M. Lewellen Award for Distinguished Service from the Council of Graduate Students!

The Lewellen Award is awarded annually to faculty, staff, administrators, and community members who have rendered exceptional service to graduate students at The Ohio State University. Since 1974, recipients have been nominated by graduate students who recognize their service. In particular, Dr. Smooth was nominated by the council for her service to graduates as the chair of the University Senate Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Throughout the academic year, Dr. Smooth focuses on public policy and underrepresented communities of color in her research, and teaches classes such as Gender, Race and American Politics, Women of Color in Social Activism, and Topics in WGSS: Galvanizing Women from Protests to Politics. During the 2017-2018 school year, she hosted The New American Electorate Beyond the Voting Booth: Building an Inclusive Democracy symposium and is currently serving as co-chair on the department’s Anti-Racism Committee. She will accept the award at the council's annual ceremony later this month.

Thank you for your hard work Dr. Smooth, and congratulations on this achievement!
