Hysterical! Women in American Comedy, co-edited by WGSS professor Linda Mizejewski, was selected for the Susan Koppelman Award for the Best Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book in Feminist Studies in Popular and American Culture!

Hysterical!, an anthology edited by Dr. Mizejewski and Victoria Sturvant (Film and Media Studies professor at The University of Oklahoma), features a number of scholars discussing women in the world of comedy, from silent cinema and stand-up to movies and talk shows. Referencing comedians such as May West, Carol Burnett, Wanda Sykes, and Whoopi Goldberg, contributors cover a number of topics in the anthology, including racial/ethnic/sexual identity, stardom, censorship, cuteness, postfeminism, gender, and more.

Named for Susan Koppelman, a feminist literary historian and editor of groundbreaking critical collections of American women’s short stories, the award is given each year by the Popular Culture Association. The association’s mission is to promote the study of popular culture throughout the world through establishment and promotion of conferences, discussion, and publications, and awards scholars and their published works that correspond with their mission.

Professors Mizejewski and Sturvant will both receive the award at the next Popular Culture Association conference in March. Congratulations on this accomplishment!
