Trans Exploits book cover

WGSS Associate Professor Jian Chen recently received the 2021 Association for Asian American Studies Book Award!

Each year, the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) gives this award for books marked for their outstanding achievement in several categories. Winners receive acknowledgement from the AAAS board, association membership, and are recognized at the annual AAAS conference.

Dr. Chen received an award in the Social Sciences category for their most recent book, Trans Exploits: Trans of Color Cultures and Technologies in Movement. Published in 2019, Trans Exploits discusses the cultural practices created by trans and gender-nonconforming artists and activists of color. Focusing on media created by trans and gender-nonconforming people of color, the book explores policies and technologies of racial gendering and assimilative social programming that have divided LGBT communities and communities of color along the lines of gender, sexuality, class, ability, and similar categories.

Congratulations to Dr. Chen on this award win!
