The first of WGSS's new faculty lecture series!
This talk will examine recent projects by artists such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga as a point of entry for discussing the possibility of "Pop Feminism." Can feminism exist in spaces marked by capitalist exploitation and conspicuous consumption, the objectification and hypersexualization of women and girls, and pervasive racism, ableism, cisnormativity, and heterosexism? How do global celebrities engage feminist standpoints in their art, businesses, and brands? Do these artists more accurately represent post-feminist sensibilities or perhaps, exciting possibilities for feminist consciousness in the twenty-first century? Lindsey specializes in black feminist theory, women's history, and popular culture.
