bell hooks, the internationally recognized feminist scholar, will be in residence for her final year at Ohio State as Visiting Distinguished Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. For the past three years, Dr. hooks has facilitated several lectures and seminars with faculty and students from across the University. On October 20, 2010, Dr. hooks participated in a very successful conversation with professor Shannon Winnubst of the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies about diversity in higher education. This public event was just one of Dr. hooks' enriching activities over the course of several years as a scholar-in-residence; others included dialogues with john powell, director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, and Valerie Lee, Vice Provost of The Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

On October 4, 2013, at 12PM, Sharon Davies will interview bell hooks during "The George Zimmerman Verdict: a Conversation with bell hooks" in the US Bank Conference Theater in the Ohio Union. This event is first come first served, so please arrive early to secure a spot.
Dr. hooks has written 35 books and numerous articles on Black feminist scholarship, popular culture, race theory, sexuality studies, and gender studies. Her work is taught at universities around the world. When she visited our campus last autumn, students were awed and engaged by her direct, accessible style. One student described hooks’ visit to a Women’s Studies class as “the most remarkable experience of my undergraduate education.” hooks is known for reaching broad audiences—students, faculty, and the academic and non-academic community. Her residency is made possible by The College of Arts and Sciences, The Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Kirwan Institute, and The Women’s Place.
