Dr. Treva Lindsey, an assistant professor in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, will talk about her perspectives and research on pop feminism.
Dr. Lindsey specializes in black feminist theory, women's history, and popular culture. This talk will examine recent projects by artists such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga as a point of entry for discussing the possibility of "Pop Feminism". Can feminism exist in spaces marked by capitalist exploitation and conspicuous consumption, the objectification and hypersexualization of women and girls, and pervasive racism, ableism, cisnormativity, and heterosexism?
