The Department of Comparative Studies will be hosting a two-session symposium on Race and Public Policy featuring Dr. John L. Jackson of the University of Pennsylvania.
As the Dean of Social Policy & Practice at UPenn, Dr. Jackson's research focuses on racial and class-based differences in contemporary urban enironments, including how urbanites themselves theorize and deploy those differences in everyday interactions. His research also involves examining and expanding critical race theory, as well as exploring how contemporary urban religions are being mobilized to improve health literacy and outcomes in poor and underserved communities. He is the author of multiple books such as Televised Redemption: The Media Production of Black Muslims, Jews, and Christians, and producer of multiple films including Bad Friday: Rastafari After Coral Gardens.
For part one of the symposium, Dr. Jackson will be discussing the topic Five Things We Get Wrong about Race & Identity and How to Unlearn Them. The talk will begin at 4:30pm on Monday, September 10th in the Ohio Union Suzanne M. Scharer Room.
