Dr. Julio Vélez Sainz is a professor in the Departamento de Filologia at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is a specialist in medieval and early modern literature and cultural studies, as well the director of the Madrid Theater Research Institute. Receiving a Ph.D. in Spanish Philology from the Universidad de Salamanca and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago, Dr. Vélez has now published multiple works. His published work can be found on Huffington Post España, as well as in multiple printed materials including Valle Inclán y Buero Vallejo: Esperpento y tragedia en la España contemporánea and Memorias de un honrado aguador: Ámbitos de estudio en torno a la difusión de Lazarillo de Tormes (prosa, teatro, cultura).

Dr. Vélez will be leading two discussions during his visit to campus on Friday, September 14th. His first talk, "Surrounded by Wolves: A Socio-Historical Approach to Symbolic Violence on Women in Spain," will be an informal discussion and conversation, and take place on Friday at 10:30am in 255 Hagerty Hall.

His second discussion, "Teatrero.com: A Diachronic Mapping of Spanish Theater," will be a more formal Spanish & Portuguese Colloquium and take place on Friday at 2:20pm in 255 Hagerty Hall. Light refreshments are to follow the event.

This event is hosted by The Department of Spanish & Portuguese, and co-sposored by The Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, The Iberian Studies Colloquium, The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, The Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and The Deaprtment of Theatre.
